Kevin Tan was born in Beijing in 2010 and is currently studying at The Purcell School for Young Musicians, one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious specialist music schools.
Kevin began studying the piano at the age of nine. Just two years later, he obtained the ARSM performance diploma with distinction. In June 2024, after only five years of piano study, he passed the ABRSM LRSM Performance Diploma with distinction. This qualification is equivalent to undergraduate-level performance standard and marked an important milestone in his artistic development.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Kevin Tan’s musical growth is the exceptional breadth and maturity of his repertoire for a pianist of his age. At just sixteen, he has already built an extensive repertoire across solo, concerto, and chamber music, placing him significantly ahead of many of his peers. His solo repertoire spans from the Baroque period to the twentieth century, including major works by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Brahms, Ravel, Debussy, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Villa-Lobos. Particularly impressive is his deep engagement with large-scale works: he has studied several major Beethoven piano sonatas, a substantial number of Chopin’s most important works, as well as the complete Chopin Études Op. 10 and Op. 25. His concerto repertoire already includes works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Saint-Saëns, while his chamber music and collaborative repertoire further demonstrate his versatility and flexibility as a collaborative musician.
At the same time, Kevin has accumulated an exceptionally substantial public performance record for an artist of his age. Over the past two years, he has given more than thirty solo recitals and concerto performances in more than ten countries, including the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Austria, Italy, Romania, Norway, and the Czech Republic. These performances have not only demonstrated his solid technical command, but also revealed the stability, artistic depth, and discipline required to present demanding repertoire consistently in serious concert settings.
Among the most representative milestones in this performance journey has been his appearance on two of the world’s most celebrated concert stages. At the age of fifteen, Kevin made his debut at the Vienna Musikverein, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. He later appeared at the Berlin Philharmonie, where he performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor”. These performances received enthusiastic responses from audiences and orchestras alike, becoming important markers in his artistic development and showing that this young musician already possesses the ability to command world-class stages.
What is especially rare in Kevin’s playing is that his performances do not rely solely on technique, speed, or power to impress the listener. Although he has already demonstrated a level of technical maturity far beyond his years, the true source of his musical impact lies in the depth of his emotional expression and the sincerity of his communication. His music often carries a direct emotional force, conveying pain, tenderness, solitude, hope, and light with naturalness and restraint. Many listeners have been deeply moved after his concerts, some even brought to tears. Such reactions do not come from outward theatrical effect, but from his sensitive understanding of the emotional core of the music and the genuine connection he is able to establish with his audience.
For Kevin Tan, the piano is not merely an instrument for displaying technical brilliance; it is a medium through which he expresses inner feeling, communicates emotion, and connects people. His performances combine the purity and sincerity of a young musician with an increasingly mature sense of structure, tonal colour, and spiritual depth. Whether in the dignity and strength of Beethoven, the poetry and delicacy of Chopin, or the emotional intensity and dramatic power of the Russian repertoire, Kevin seeks to go beyond the notes themselves and enter the deeper spiritual world of the music. It is this quality that allows his playing to create such strong resonance with audiences, reminding listeners that music is not only an art of sound, but also a force capable of comforting, awakening, and touching the human soul.
Kevin Tan’s musical development has been shaped by the dedicated guidance of three distinguished piano educators. Since 2021, he has studied with Florian Mitrea, Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Professor Mitrea has played an important role in helping Kevin expand his repertoire, supporting his significant progress in works ranging from the Classical to the Romantic periods, as well as in the Russian piano tradition. At the same time, Kevin has continued to receive guidance from Professor Christopher Hinterhuber, Head of the Piano Department at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. With his profound musical insight and rigorous artistic standards, Professor Hinterhuber has offered Kevin important guidance, particularly in the interpretation and stylistic understanding of Austro-German repertoire, enabling him to deepen both his musical comprehension and expressive range. Since 2026, Kevin has also had the privilege of studying with Professor Christopher Elton, widely regarded as one of the most distinguished and influential piano pedagogues in the world today. Having taught for many years at the Royal Academy of Music, Professor Elton has nurtured generations of internationally acclaimed pianists. The opportunity to receive his guidance marks a new and important stage in Kevin’s artistic development.
In addition to his performance activities, Kevin has also achieved notable success in competitions. In 2025, he won first prizes in three categories at the London International Chopin Competition. He has also won first prize at the Elite Musicians International Piano Competition in Romania, as well as major awards at the North London Music Festival Piano Solo Competition, the Global Star Music Competition, the International Young Musicians Competition, and the London Young Musician Competition.
Kevin Tan’s musical path also reflects a strong sense of artistic mission and social responsibility. Since 2024, he has given an annual charity solo recital at Aldenham Church in North London, hoping to bring peace, calm, and joy to elderly members of the surrounding community through music. He has also given charity concerts at Charlton House and Regent Hall in London, further extending this philanthropic musical practice by bringing music directly to community audiences through regular performances. These charity concerts form part of his continuing commitment to public-benefit musical activities, reflecting his belief that music is not only a form of artistic expression, but also a source of comfort, connection, warmth, and human care.
In 2026, Kevin Tan will continue to expand his international concert season with a series of solo recitals in the United Kingdom, China, the Czech Republic, and Austria. One of the major highlights of the year will take place on 24 July 2026, when he will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” in Beijing with the China National Opera House Symphony Orchestra. This collaboration reflects the important recognition he has gained within China’s mainstream classical music scene. Later that year, on 7 September 2026, he will appear at Cadogan Hall in London with the English Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. This large-scale and highly demanding programme fully demonstrates the remarkable speed of his artistic development, as well as the seriousness and ambition of his musical path.
Looking at Kevin Tan’s development so far, one can clearly see the emergence of a young artist of discipline, intelligence, and distinctive individuality. With his exceptional musical instinct, self-disciplined approach to study, rich imagination, and increasingly mature artistic voice, he has already shown extraordinary potential. As his musicianship continues to deepen, what makes Kevin particularly compelling is not only the remarkable level of achievement he has reached at such a young age, but also the clarity of his artistic direction, the sincerity of his emotional expression, and the depth of his artistic pursuit. These qualities make him one of the most promising young pianists to watch.
